Garment Care Guide: Silk, Cashmere, Linen, Leather & More | Alba Sydney

Garment Care Guide

Always follow your garment's care label as the first point of reference. This guide is here to help you get the most from your wardrobe and extend the life of each piece.

Silk

Hand wash in cool water with a pH-neutral detergent, or dry clean. Never wring. Roll in a towel to remove moisture. Dry flat away from sunlight. Press on a cool setting with a cloth between the iron and fabric.

Cashmere

Hand wash in lukewarm water with a specialist wash, or cool machine cycle in a mesh bag. Lay flat to dry. Do not hang. Store folded. Use a cashmere brush occasionally to prevent pilling and restore softness.

Linen

Machine wash on a cool, gentle cycle and remove promptly. Hang while slightly damp, or iron on medium-high while damp for a crisp finish. Linen softens beautifully with each wash.

Wool & Merino

Hand wash or machine wool cycle in cool water with wool-safe detergent. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry or hang. Store folded with a cedar block nearby to deter moths.

Cotton & Poplin

Machine wash at 30–40° per label. Wash darks inside out to preserve colour. Iron while slightly damp on a medium-high setting for a clean finish.

Viscose & Cupro

Hand wash in cool water or dry clean. Lay flat to dry. Hanging while wet will stretch the garment. Steam rather than iron where possible.

Leather

Never machine wash or submerge. Wipe clean with a barely damp cloth and air dry naturally away from heat. Condition regularly with a leather cream to prevent drying and cracking. Store stuffed with tissue to hold shape in a breathable bag, away from direct light.

Denim

Wash as infrequently as possible to preserve colour and shape. Turn inside out and machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Avoid tumble drying. Hang or lay flat. Never bleach. Air between wears to freshen.

Polyester & Nylon

Machine wash on a cool, gentle cycle. Heat can damage fibres and cause pilling. Avoid tumble drying on high; air dry where possible. Use a low iron or steam if needed. No direct high heat.

Hanging

Tailoring, silk blouses, and structured pieces. Use padded or wooden hangers.

Folding

Knits, cashmere, and jersey should always be folded to prevent stretching.

Seasonal storage

Store cleaned garments only. Moths are attracted to body oils. Use cedar or lavender sachets.

Garment bags

Use breathable cotton bags (not plastic) for special pieces and dry-cleaned items.

Hardware

Metal fastenings, buckles, and hardware on bags and belts can scratch and snag fine fabrics. Wrap hardware in tissue when storing and avoid stacking bags with exposed metal.

Jewellery

Rough or sharp edges on rings, bracelets, and necklaces can pull threads and snag silk and knitwear. Remove jewellery before dressing and undressing, particularly with fine knits and delicate wovens.

Stone & granite surfaces

Granite benchtops and rough stone or timber surfaces can snag and pull fibres irreparably. Rest delicate garments on a soft cloth or bag rather than directly on hard surfaces.

Sun fading

UV exposure fades colour, weakens fibres, and dries out leather. Even a few hours can cause irreversible damage to silk and denim. Never dry in direct sun; store away from windows and rotate hanging pieces regularly.
